Close to  Kafountine lies an archipelago centred on Karone island, only accessible by the pirogues which gently explore the 

rivers (bolongs) of this beautiful hidden world. These tributaries of the sea reach deep into the interior and form a complex labyrinth over hundreds of miles, surrounded by lush mangroves. There are a small handful of remote villages on these islands - Boun, Kailo, Saloulou, Hillol - and here life is lived to an ancient rhythm, where traditional ways meet a pristine wild environment. Time stands still, offering a rare sense of truly being remote from the world and its cares. The pirogue tour is also an opportunity  to birdwatch and to fish. Swimming and picnicking on the deserted beaches of the bolongs are also part of the trip. This immense natural space is unique and is considered the jewel of the region.
